Rev W. Fred Allen 1897-1898

Rev Allen was an avid photographer and sportsman. His photograph of “St Paul’s Reformed Episcopal Church and other parts of the island appear in "Sketches and Stories of the Lake Erie Islands" published in 1898.

Rev Allen received his Bachelor of Divinity from Bexley Hall, Kenyon College in Ohio. Although St Paul's was part of the Reformed Episcopal Church in 1890s, there is no indication the Rev Allen ever left the Episcopal Church. Perhaps his arrival marked the beginning of St Paul's decision to return. We note that Jay Cooke also remained a steadfast member of the Episcopal Church throughout his life time.

No doubt, Rev Allen knew Jay Cooke. They both shared an interest in fishing but neither on fished on Sunday. In the summers Jay Cooke was found in one of the pews of St Paul's if he was on Gibraltar.

An early photo by the Rev Allen shows the church surrounded by a white picket fence. The original rectory was a two story building with a long front porch standing almost exactly where the current rectory was built in 1959.
