About South Bass Island...
St Paul's worship services are held every Sunday. at 10:30am
In June through mid-September there is an additional 7:45am Sunday service for those who want to get their day started early.
Today we have an Episcopal priest living on the island which has been true for the majorityof the church's 150 year history. Our priest is the only resident clergy member on the Bass Islands. St Paul's worship attendance changes with the seasons. In the summer we welcome back our summer residents and visitors who are staying on the island. Many of our seasonal residents become involved in our parish activities. Our summer worship attendance is higher than the winter attendance.
The population of the village of Put-In-Bay was 128 people at the 2000 census. There are approximately 200 full-time South Bass Island residents. Some of these residents remain on the island for the entire winter. As a result, St Paul's is active all 12 months of the year.
Put-in-Bay has several businesses which are open all year including the island market, the hardware store, a gas station, a post office, a bank and the school. The school houses the library. The island school is used for grades pre-kindergarten through 12. The school provides an excellent education for the island's youth. You will also find one gas station, a post office, one bank and two cemeteries.
In the winter, supplies and perishables are flown to the island. along with the mail, parcels and bank employees (the bank is open one day a week in winter - three days a week in summer). In the warmer months most things arrive by ferry. The ferry can carry moving trucks, dump trucks and other large vehicles needed for construction and to supply the business which are open spring through fall.
Hotels and B&Bs provide lodging for island visitors. This is an excelent place for a one day visit or a weekend retreat for parsih vestries, bible study groups or youth groups, especially in the middle of the week. Call St Paul's if you would like information on how to plan a parish retreat at Put-in-Bay.
South Bass Island does not have a hospital, but does have an Emergency Medical Service that uses a Life Flight helicopter to transport critically ill patients to mainland medical facilities. The island is home to the Put-in-Bay Airport. (3W2) For a look at our airstrip, see the airport on youtube
